About this tour

Our Marrakech to Fes desert tour (3 days) is the most efficient way to cross the Sahara between Morocco’s two great cities — and the most spectacular. Instead of a flight or a long highway day, you travel the desert road: the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, the Todgha Gorge, a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, and a night in a Merzouga desert camp — arriving in Fes with the Sahara already behind you.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech — High Atlas — Ait Ben Haddou — Dades Valley

Depart Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) with panoramic photo stops. Walk through Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified mud-brick village behind Gladiator and Game of Thrones, then continue past Ouarzazate through the Skoura palm grove and the Valley of Roses to your guesthouse in the Dades Valley.

Day 2: Dades — Todgha Gorge — Merzouga camel trek & desert camp

Morning in the Todgha Gorge, where 300-metre canyon walls narrow to a river path. After lunch in Tinghir, cross the desert plain to Merzouga, swap the van for a camel, and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Dinner, Berber drums and a night under the stars in a desert camp.

Day 3: Sunrise dunes — Ziz Valley — Middle Atlas — Fes

Wake for sunrise over the dunes, ride back, and travel north through the Ziz Valley’s palm oases, Midelt and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas — watch for Barbary apes near Azrou — arriving in Fes by evening.

What’s included

Private transport in a modern air-conditioned 4×4 or van with an English-speaking driver-guide, hotel or riad pickup in Marrakech, accommodation with dinner and breakfast, the sunset camel trek, and drop-off at your Fes riad.
